Checkers

In case you haven't already heard, I bought a pony off Craigslist a couple weeks ago. I know, you are thinking "she's crazy".. not only did I buy him sight unseen, but he also is currently living in Idaho.. about 8 hours away from here! My sweet friend Asya was perusing Craigslist and came across the ad for Checkers- he was a pony that someone's daughter had outgrown and they wanted $100 for him. When Asya emailed me asking if I wanted to get him for Grace she said he could live at her house for free.. I thought "she's crazy.. she can't be serious".. but then I looked at the photo and thought "dang, that's one cute pony!".. So we chatted over email about it, then chatted on the phone about it some more.. And ultimately we decided it wasn't such a crazy idea after all. Asya (and her very supportive husband KC) have been doing all the hard work for us- interviewing the owner, picking him up, fixing the fence, tracking down hay, buying supplies, making vet appointments.. Not only that, she is going to work on training him and figure out all his quirks for us (since she is much more equine savvy than I)..Hopefully we will get to fly out to Idaho in December to finally meet him (November is too busy with our already planned vacation)..And in the Spring I hope to bring him closer to us if we can find a good place on Fox Island to board him.. I admit I still harbor some resentment that as a child I was promised (not once, but multiple times) that when we moved to California I could get a horse.. and I never even got riding lessons! So, although I say this pony is for Grace, I think, in a way, he's also for the ten year old girl who moved to Chula Vista in 1980 who always dreamed of having her own horse..
